Baby boomers were responsible for the highest divorce rate in history—22.8 per 1,000 married couples in 1979 compared to 3.5 per 1,000 in 2008.

Nearly a third of divorces, according to the most recent census, are among people who have been married 20 to 40 years.  They have been called the greatest divorcing generation in U. S. history.
