Does sex count as exercise? Data has revealed that sex can be considered exercise.

As far back as the 1950’s couples have been asked to strap on monitors, blood-pressure cuffs, oxygen masks and other paraphernalia and copulate, to scientifically quantify the impacts of sex. The focus was on whether sex can kill you by precipitating a heart attack. These studies showed that heart rates rise during sex, but to no significance. The risk of a sex-related heart attack is small, except when the sex is extramarital (remember Nelson Rockefeller).

The issue of sex as exercise has remained largely unexplored, until recently. A recent study showed that sex qualified as moderate exercise. That’s the equivalent of playing doubles in tennis or walking uphill. Sex burned four calories per minute for men and three per minutes for women, during sessions that lasted from 10 to 57 minutes, including foreplay (the average was 25 minutes).
