How well do you really know your significant other? According to a recent poll in the Wall Street Journal, more people are employing private investigators to check the backgrounds of their fiancé before their tie the knot. “Investigators across the nation say business has boomed in recent years from clients who want their sweethearts investigated for potentially deal-breaking habits and secrets.”

Even though we can find out a lot about a person using web searches and social media, there’s still a lot that is not “out there” for people to find out about.  People are taking longer to get married and accumulating relationship baggage. Many adults are hesitant to go ahead with marriage without knowing everything about the person they are going to marry. Financial debts can be a real deal-breaker. Once you are married, you may be responsible for your spouse’s financial debts.

You may think that living together is the ultimate test for whether a relationship will succeed, but not always. It is easy to live with someone and not have any conversations about plans for the future or how they want to raise their children. One of the downsides of living together is that it often gives someone the illusion of true intimacy while allowing partners to keep to themselves the most important pieces of information.
